The Aruba Ocean Villas hotel decided to increase the capacity of their accommodations. We designed a complex composed of 7 villas in Aruba, Savenata.

The project takes a contemporary approach to a Joglo, a traditional vernacular house with a and minimalist touch. In order to allow for a new way to experience space within the Joglo, we used modern materials and construction techniques. Traditional exterior walls were made of glass instead of wood to allow for guests to view the ocean while insulating them from the elements. Modern adaptations such as hollow interior wall and retractable exterior glass walls allow for guests to experience the ocean breeze when desired. These modern adaptations were created within the framework of the Joglo architectural style with a traditional straw roof and tall minimally processed wood columns which integrated both the Joglo style and the external tropical ocean environment.
